Martin's Tavern Entryway Leaded Beveled Glass WindowsWe had the honor of making all new entryway windows for the famous Martin's Tavern in Washington DC (www.martinstaverm.com). This restaurant has been there since 1933 and was a big hangout for Presidents and Representatives. Apparently President Kennedy proposed to Jackie in one of the booths now named the "proposal booth". It is also a wonderful place to eat if you are in the Georgetown area. These windows were constructed using lead came and incorporated custom bevels with clear antique, and black glass. The lettering was sandblasted into black flashed glass. Flashed glass is a hand blown glass that has two layers. One thicker (in this case clear) with a thinner layer of color (in this case black) on top. The thinner layer can be etched away exposing the thicker layer. Since the thicker layer was clear it looks white from the sandblasting. The panels have a very tradition Victorian style with a flowing Art Nouveau feel.
